What is the Mersey Beer Mile…?

It’s a stretch that runs from Gibraltar Row in the shadow of the Liver Building to Stanhope Street in the Baltic Triangle.  It takes in five great Liverpool based breweries and their respective taprooms along with a world-famous waterfront, although as the crow-flies it is around a mile and a half between the two breweries bookending things, we can choose to ignore that!  There is the opportunity to diverge from the path too, as there are a few great pubs and bars that punctuate the distance from the Strand down to Stanhope Street.

So who are the breweries?
Starting in the Baltic Triangle and working from South end to North by the Royal Liver Building, they are Cain’s Brewery, Love Lane Brewery, Black Lodge Brewery, Carnival Brewing Company and Azvex Brewing Company.  Each has their own distinct range and contributes something different to the Mersey Beer Mile, be that a modern ‘craft brewing’ sensibility or brewing things in a more traditional style.

How long does the walk take?
Door to door from Cains to Azvex, it would take around 35 mins without any stops along the way.  Of course, there are great beers to be had at a number of pubs along the way, the Three Graces, Albert Dock, St Nicholas’ Church and Baltic Market to take in.

Are the venues child and dog friendly?
Yes, mostly they are!  You’ll need to check on each individually when you plan on going; there may be private events on from time to time and occasionally public events which won’t be suitable for our smaller furry friends, but all the brewery taps will allow children in during the day (although not necessarily beyond 6pm) and they often actively encourage people to bring their pooches for some attention and treats.  The pub venues are less able to cater for dogs and children, so factor that into any visit accordingly.

When is best to visit?
Generally speaking, the taprooms are open on Friday afternoon through to Saturday night, they usually close around 10pm too.  There are occasional times when they will open on Sundays and Thursday evenings too, but being attached to operational brewhouses means that it’s best to check before you plan on visiting.  Some venues are open throughout the week, depending on events or other factors too.  Check each venue individually before you visit.

Can we grab some beers to go?
Absolutely!  They usually all have their beers in small package (usually canned) to take away for gifts or to drink at home whilst you reminisce about how great your day visiting the breweries was.

Cain’s Brewery
Cain’s recently came back onto the scene in 2021, nestled at the centre of the ‘Terracotta Palace’ on which the former Cain’s (and Higson’s) was built, the brewery is smaller than its predecessor but has brought back some of their classic beers back to life along with a handful of new recipes.  The brewery is augmented by a number of bars present on the site with the stalwart Brewery Tap on the corner, the new courtyard bars and Punch Tarmey’s all ready to pour a pint of beer once known as ‘Liverpool in a glass’.  Spacious, modern and with a healthy nod to the history, Cain’s is part of the bedrock of Liverpool’s brewing and beer heritage.

Love Lane Brewery
Love Lane is located in the heart of the Baltic Triangle area within a building that as recently as 2015 had no roof and was a derelict rubber factory.  Given how the space looks now, as a modern, comfortable and polished Taproom, brewery, distillery and restaurant this is quite the turnaround.  Once known as Liverpool Crafty Brewery, Love Lane changed its moniker based on the most popular core beer they brewed and moved from their Love Lane site to their current home in the Baltic Triangle.  They brew a range of solid modern and traditional style beers and have the perfect space in which for you to enjoy them.

Black Lodge Brewing
Having moved from their small slice of Kitchen Street in the Baltic Triangle, Black Lodge are located at the end of King’s Dock Street off Wapping.  Only a 5-10 minute walk from Liverpool One, this brewery and taproom has a massive outdoor space and a cosy indoor taproom which pours modern craft beers, mostly pale ales and IPAs, which are backed up by stouts, sours and lagers.  The site is large enough to host Craft Beer Festivals and is the perfect space to enjoy some sunshine and a few beers during the warmer months of the year.

Carnival Brewing Company
Carnival Brewing’s tasting rooms are located on Gibraltar Row, not far from the Pier Head and Three Graces, the perfect location to enjoy some sightseeing of famous Liverpool landmarks, before trying some local beers.  Carnival brew a mostly modern range of craft beers with the occasional traditional style thrown in, with beers on both keg and cask dispense, there is sure to be something for everyone’s taste.  Super hoppy pales, Kolsch style, big sumptuous stouts and bracing sours are all brewed on site by the team.  The brewery also regularly hosts events and concerts, with a firm focus on providing the local music and arts scene with a regular place to showcase their talent alongside some great beer.

Azvex Brewing Company
Liverpool’s newest addition to the brewing scene is Azvex, taking up a site located on Gibraltar Row a stone’s throw from the Royal Liver Building and the Dock Road.  They have made quite an impression on the scene with an array of densely hoppy pale ales, super-charged double IPAs and massive Imperial Stouts; producing excellent iterations of modern brewing styles.  This is very much a modern outfit, brewing craft beer with a focus on ever new and improved recipes.  Their brewery taproom is bright, spacious and has over ten taps with a range of styles ready to pour.
