Frequently Asked Questions
Can we join the Liverpool Beer Collective as a member?
Yes, although we do have criteria that you need to fulfil to be a member, if you fulfil these and want to proceed – drop us an email. First, you need to be a bar, brewery, pub or bottle shop located within the Liverpool City region (we can let you know if you ask if you fall within the geographical boundary we have set). Second, you need to have a focus (or at least partial focus) in your business on supporting local independent breweries (buying locally brewed beer) or at least a focus on supporting good independently brewed beer (so if your bar is exclusively tied lines, it rules you out). Third, we like to work with stakeholders who are committed to good practices, treating staff well, being inclusive and open to collaboration and passionate about great beer. We consider each application to become a member when we receive an email enquiring about membership, we vet each request for membership before we respond and we have a framework which all members should adhere to.
We have received aggressive and borderline abusive messages in the past from those expecting us to provide support, seek their businesses or to otherwise engage with them. This isn’t acceptable and we won’t look to work with people or businesses who behave in such a way. As written across our website and socials, we are a voluntary organisation and don’t charge for membership or support – we don’t always get to see output for find out about new businesses as quickly as we would like to, but this doesn’t provide license to engage with us in an abusive manner. Play nice!
What does membership entail?
There are no fees or other costs in being a member of the Liverpool Beer Collective and being a member gives first access to our support for any events, social media output or other help you need. When we host events such as Liverpool Beer Week, we will actively engage with our members to provide support or help create events, new beers or get them involved in other initiatives as they come to our attention. We will also pass on any business opportunities we receive via enquiry to members as a first port of call and we frequently receive emails asking for information about places to visit in Liverpool for great food and drink.
As a member you will usually have a focus on quality beers, great local beers and inclusive environment, so we’ll be happy to pass on a recommendation. As a member, you’ll also have access to other contact other members in our group networks to share intelligence or other resources where you require.
Can we get social media support?
Yes, we love to hear from businesses locally about what they are doing – though it has to be about the beer. Feel free to tag us in your social media output, as long as it is related to one of our members, great independently brewed beer or a beer event, we’ll repost content. Events such as concerts, gigs, comedy nights or pub quizzes aren’t our wheelhouse and we have to ignore these to prevent our own output getting ‘spammy’. Also, please don’t tag us in social media posts about beer brewed by macro companies (e.g. Heineken, AB Inbev, Carlsberg, Molson Coors etc) – we want to focus our support on local and independently brewed beers. Finally, we don’t always have an online presence due to the voluntary nature of our output, so please do not be offended if we miss any posts!
Can our event be listed on the Liverpool Beer Collective website?
It can! Regardless of being a member, we love to hear about beer orientated events taking place in bars, pubs or breweries across the region and will look to get them listed on our website which is updated regularly. As above with the social media support, it has to be a beer related event – tap takeovers, meet the brewers, organised or tutored tastings, beer launches are all great; quizzes, gigs, or gigs do not fulfil our required criteria. If you’re unsure, just ask us or get in touch via our Contact Page.
Can my business be listed on the Liverpool Beer Collective good beer map?
Of course – in the event that your venue stocks beers as outlined in the criteria above – local and independently brewed beer, supporting other businesses in the city region as a preference. Usually if your venue is a chain off licence or is full of tied lines, it’s not what we look to promote. We don’t discriminate on dispense method either, hand pulled cask, keg and small package are all fine in our book. Just drop us a message via email or our socials about your venue, be sure to include some details about your venue (number of lines, dispense type, what beer and breweries you stock) so we can include details to our map!
Can I get involved with the Liverpool Beer Collective Committee?
We are more than happy to take on new members for the Committee, although we do have to limit our numbers (usually up to 10 at any one time, though depending on how busy we are this number can be lower) and look for people to join us who are willing to commit to providing time, a bit of expertise (or willingness to learn) on beer and can offer something that is helpful in supporting our members and promoting great beer around the city region. We’d happily consider social media savants, podcasters, bloggers, writers and homebrewers and people who are passionate about communicating about great beer.
We love to have Committee members who are willing to help generate content, spread the word about what we do and look to get involved as much as possible with our members, helping with events, writing up articles on new beers, hosting tastings, brewing collaboration beers and much more. We do have Committee members who are also employed within our membership, as this helps us create stronger ties and increase our success in collaboration. If you want to join, drop us a message via our website outlining what you’re about and what you think you could bring to the Liverpool Beer Collective!
